Vendor Information: JAVA & Co. is brought to you by a husband and wife team with an extensive background in the hospitality, food and restaurant business. Leaving New York City and Las Vegas for a change of pace, brought them to Illinois. After a few years of 'quiet living', the hospitality and food business began calling to them. In 2008, JAVA & Co. was born.

JAVA & Co. creates chef-inspired coffee infused specialties. Handmade utilizing proprietary small batch recipes with fine ingredients like real vanilla and hand cracked eggs in the hand cut biscotti; locally roasted coffee beans in the syrups; freshly ground whole spices and coffee in the sweet and savory JAVA Spice; and dairy cream and butter in their artisan caramels.

In their short time in business, they have received national recognition and have been featured by Country Living Magazine, Time Out New York, Daily Candy and many more!

Vendor Information: Welcome to Jenkins family farm! My husband Dave and I - with help from our oldest son Matthew, farm 1000 acres of mostly corn and soybeans. My husband is a third generation farmer. We live on - what at one time - was his grandparents farm. About ten years ago I decided we needed to add more to our farm - to have contact with the local people in the community who consumed our products, so I decided to start an on-property farm market.

We had an old barn that was built in 1921 (with timber from the farm it sits on) that was not really being used. Fast forward ten years. We now farm 1000 acres of corn and soybeans, nine acres of sweet corn, two acres of pumpkins and another three acres of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, green beans and other assorted vegetables. We sell at three farmers markets in the Peoria, Illinois area. We also have an on-farm market and bakery which is open seasonally.

"Most farmers are not as lucky as I have been. The farm markets allow us to talk directly to people about our food and how its grown. American farmers want our food to be the safest in the world, because what YOU eat is also what WE eat."

Stop by the Heights Farm Market on Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm - now through mid-September - to meet Pat and pick-up some of her wonderful produce, sweet corn if it's still available (the best in Illinois) and fresh baked pies!

This week we are showcasing DMG's Beehaven Farm!

Owners: Dan and Miseon Grillot

Local Items: Honey, Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Hot Peppers, Garlic, Eggplant, Okra, Summer Squash, Vegetables, Fruit and Fresh Cut Flowers.

Vendor Information: Dan and Miseon started their farm 16 years ago when Dan retired from the United States Air Force. They pride themselves on being good stewards of the land - growing a wide variety of flowers, vegetables, fruit and nuts without the use of chemicals.

Dan is also a beekeeper. New for 2011, he has a small quantity of high quality honey available at the market. (Note: I purchased their honey and it is buttery, smooth delicious goodness in a jar!)

Stop by the Heights Farm Market on Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm - now through mid-September - to meet Dan and Miseon. They are looking forward to meeting you!

Owner: Larry Shawback

Local Items: General Produce

Vendor Story: White Chimney Farm - located in Washburn, Illinois - provides all naturally grown (from certified organic seed) produce of the old Heirloom varieties. In Larry's efforts to accomplish this, he uses the SPIN method of farming. SPIN stands for Small Plot Intensive Relay. By using this method, there is a freshly harvested supply of produce for each market week - also keeping an active crop rotation for best soil health.

"I am proud of these all natural growing methods," states Larry, "while not yet certified as organic as mentioned above, my seeds are certified organic."

Ground care is managed only by rototilling and hand hoeing. No weed inhibitors or pesticides in any form are ever used. Fertilization - only all natural and organic composting materials are used. Natural soil amendments - kelp meal and a fish based liquid round things out. As for water? Whenever possible, captured rain water is used. When not available, ground water from a cistern or well water is used.

This is Larry's fifth year of market gardening. The first four years were part-time, but as of July 1st, 2011, he is a full-time gardener. And Larry - from all of us at the Heights Farm Market - we are so glad you are! White Chimney Farm is a wonderful addition to the Heights Farm Market and the local community.

Owner: Kathy Corso

Local Items: Handmade Pasta, Ravioli, Pesto, Salsa and Fresh Herbs and Produce

Chi mangia bene, vive bene - Who eats well, lives well - is the motto of Kathy Corso's farm which started in 2006 as a family enterprise in an effort to grow local herbs and produce in a healthy sustainable way. Kathy says that neither she nor her two adult daughters, Angela and Kristina, had any real agricultural training (except for a backyard garden). The whole idea came about in the spring of 2005 after the girls returned from an Italian Farming Adventure. In the fall of 2004 Angela and Kristina spent time on five organic farms in Northern Italy. They were part of the program World Wide Opportunities in Organic Farms (WWOOF).

That was the inspiration for the family's efforts, and they started with too large a field out in Washburn near the Crow Creek, thus the name, and had no machinery so everything was and still is very hands on. After a few challenging years, they moved to an urban garden site. They saw that value added products were often appreciated by their busy customers. Handmade pastas, basil pesto and fresh salsas were and are best sellers. Kathy sated, "It has always been challenging to find the right venues and we soon realized that good marketing was essential."

While WWOOFING, her daughters became good friends with a family in Tuscany who have run an organic olive oil farm “Podere Vallari” for 30 years. "In early June we (our whole family) had the opportunity to visit this farm seven years later. The beauty of the region and the fabulous quality of “Podere Vallari” is again inspiring and helps us all recommit to the “local foods” and sustainable farming movement. I think the appreciation for fresh, wholesome food has evolved for our family the way it has for many of us. I know that I cook some new recipe including some new veggie or grain on a regular basis." Kathy says that most Italians buy fresh each day. "Even larger grocery stores have the hugest fresh produce sections!" The last 4 days of their recent tour were in Rome where the Campo di Fiori (a flower and vegetable market) is open everyday but Sunday.

Sweet Corn!!

As the farmers know all too well - the weather plays a major and essential part in the growing season - speeding up or delaying crops. Well...wait no longer...SWEET CORN from Jenkins' Farms is in. It is ready and will be freshly picked for Wednesday's market, which is tomorrow - the 13th!!

If you haven't had the pleasure of eating Jenkins' sweet corn. You don't know what you are missing. Many farmers in Illinois say that have good sweet corn, but it is really your taste buds that make the final decision. I love it. It's the best sweet corn I've had since growing up in Oregon. The grocery stores can't compete. You decide for yourself....

Fresh and Beautiful...

It was a beautiful Wednesday for the market. The best weather since the market began a few weeks ago. Vendors and customers alike were quite thankful and enjoyed the afternoon and evening outdoors.

If you weren't able to make it out yesterday, we took a few pictures to capture some of the goodness that the vendors were selling - just to tempt you for next time. You can see the complete album on our Heights Farm Market Facebook page.

I did my shopping when the market opened and walked away with strawberry topping/preserves from Jenkins Country Farm (I got the last jar until more strawberries come in); hydroponic tomatoes from Ioerger Farms; freshly picked green beans and the best handmade portabello mushroom and arugula ravioli in the world from Crow Creek Farms. Truly such wonderful products from my local vendors - buying fresh and buying local with the best flavor - I feel so lucky to have them right in my backyard - so to speak.

By chance if you weren't able to make it this week - be sure to make it out at least a few times this season. Produce can change as the weeks go by, so you don't want to miss out! Plus, there are fresh breads, pies, eggs, meats and other specialty foods - all locally made and produced. It really can't get much fresher and tastier than that!

Katic Breads is a new vendor at Heights Farm Market. You may have read about them in the news recently. They will be unable to attend the market tomorrow (Wednesday, June 22nd). We're looking forward to them bringing their breads on June 29th!

Kathy Corso with Crow Creek Farms will be back soon with her incredible handmade artisan pastas! She just returned from Italy, so we hope she'll jump in and start preparing her pasta in the upcoming days! Have you tried her ravioli? It's amazing!!

The first market of the Heights Farm Market season - opening day - success!

The rain stayed away. The sun came out. The vendors that braved the weather forecast circled their wagons and set-up their locally grown and handmade wares for all to see. Guests gathered. Recipe sharing. New and interesting produce. Farm fresh eggs. Strawberry topping. Homemade casseroles and pies. New vendors to meet. Handmade soap. Vegetable plants. Familiar faces. Spicy habanero caramels. All natural farm raised meat. And many new faces in the crowd.

We couldn't have asked for a better opening day! Thank you to all who came out to usher in the opening day of the Heights Farm Market 2011 Season.

Cocoa Shell Mulch: Friend or Foe

Spring is trying to get here with each passing day. In some areas, just when you thought it was safe to drink in the spring air - snow is in the forecast. Ahhhh, it will get here, maybe by fall.

With spring weather comes outdoor spring projects - lawn and garden for many of us. This year I was excited about utilizing Cocoa Shell Mulch. Have you heard of it? It has great color. It's recycled / upcycled / re-used cocoa bean shells for mulch. Love the idea. Love chocolate. Love the 'green' attribute. And lu-uv the aroma! As I did some quick research, I find it won't work for our home. We have two dogs - boxers. And our youngest, well, he puts anything and everything in his mouth. Danger Will Robinson...Danger....

The 2011 pre-season is off and running - offering an indoor farm market with local produce and locally handmade specialties will begin in March for the 2011 season.

This spring, select vendors will enjoy Thursday afternoons INDOORS at the Atrium Market inside of Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. Fresh picked (chemical / insecticide free) baby greens, beets, farm fresh eggs, peppers, handmade breads, cookies, hand cut biscotti, granola, caramels and artisan jewelry are a just a few of the wonderful items to be found.

Growing through the Winter Months...

Snow is on the ground in Illinois and keeps coming. The temperatures have dropped and keep dropping. Can you grow produce through the winter months? Yes you can!

I have organic rosemary that I bring indoors through the winter months. There is such delight in harvesting a fresh sprig of rosemary for a roasted chicken or herbed potatoes. I love it!

Holiday Open House - November 19th & 20th

Jenkins Country Comforts & Farm Market is holding a holiday open house today and tomorrow (Friday, 11/19 & Saturday, 11/20). Their historic barn and gift shop is located off scenic route 26 - just a few miles outside of Lacon going towards Peoria on Rt. 26. Look for the big red barn and open house signs!

Stop in for some hot apple cider, holiday gifts and decor and delicious handmade baked goods. You can't go wrong. Add it to your agenda for the weekend and be sure to stop by!

As I write this blog post, it is hard to believe there are only THREE (3) market days left in the season. Where did the time go? The Heights Farm Market's last official market day of 2010 will be Wednesday, September 15th.

We're already planning for 2011!

The team at the Heights Farm Market is looking at putting together an indoor holiday market - perhaps in November - to showcase winter vegetables and specialty gifting items. Stay tuned to this blog and/or our Facebook page for the details and location as they develop.

are just a few of the fresh, locally grown items for sale. Also available are fresh locally baked pies, breads, pasta, pesto, granola, biscotti, popcorn, coffee infused syrups, pancake mix, handmade caramels and more.

The Heights Farm Market is open every Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A little rain may not keep us away, but we will close down when severe weather approaches. Customer and vendor safety is a priority! It has been a stormy start to the season and we hope for blue skies ahead...well, at least on Wednesdays!

As you plan your weekly market visits, feel free to contact our vendors at their vendor links on the side of this blog. Each vendor will be glad to share their market schedules and set aside orders for you in advance of the market. It can be a bummer to have items already sold out when you arrive and the fresh picked produce can go fast...really fast.

Summer is here and the temperatures are rising!

Cool off this season with premium ice cream from local Emack & Bolio's - this year featured at the Heights Farm Market on opening day - Wednesday, June 16th! If you're unable to make it on the 16th - they will be back on the 23rd and the 30th of June. A sweet break from the summer heat!

As you walk the market during the evening hours and develop a hunger - Haddad's will be available with savory offerings and their well-loved Lemon Shake-ups.

It promises to be a fun season - so bring the family and enjoy a night out at the Heights Farm Market beginning Wednesday, June 16th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm!

Spring is in the air...

AND the Heights Farm Market season begins Wednesday, June 16th, 2010. Vendors are signing up to participate right and left - offering a wonderful variety of local products to choose from this year. In order to find out more about the vendors and where applicable, order direct post-season, the links to confirmed vendors' websites and / or blog and / or facebook page will be posted on this blog - check back often.

A FEW NOTEWORTHY ITEMS:

* Market cooking demonstrations are being scheduled - featuring local chefs sharing their culinary techniques and farm fresh recipes. Complimentary taste samples will be available - YUM!

* Market Brochures are new this year! Be sure to pick up a Heights Farm Market brochure to stay informed of seasonal produce (what and when it will be available) and of course, what's happening at the market. The brochures will be updated throughout the season and are being distributed pre-season in the Peoria area.

* Re-useable Market Bags were introduced mid-season last year and are coming back with the custom artwork that so many of you fell in love with. Available for purchase at the market beginning in June, and soon, they will be available for purchase on this blog with a link for payment to PayPal. Stay tuned.

* Sponsorship. These large, well crafted canvas bags are also available for sponsorship opportunities. Is your business actively in support of the Heights Farm Market? The market season is just around the corner. Planting has started and there are a few small, little green plants growing in greenhouses around the area. Currently, we're working on keeping you informed of what the season has in store. As we continue to grow and expand the market offerings, join us this year for chef demonstrations and other educational exhibits. We are excited at what the season will offer our market guests.
